IGP Announces Arrest of Five Suspects in Robbery and Murder of Andrews Amankwaa

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno has announced the arrest of five suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of Mr. Andrews Amankwaa at Ohwim-Amanfrom in Kumasi on 10 February 2026.

Addressing a press briefing on the case, the IGP described the incident as a “tragic and senseless act of violence” that has deeply affected residents of the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Incident Overview

According to preliminary police investigations, armed men forced their way into Mr. Amankwaa’s residence shortly after 11:30 p.m. on the night of the incident. The assailants allegedly made away with cash, electronic devices and other valuables before fatally assaulting him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“What began as a robbery,” the IGP stated, “turned into a senseless act of violence that robbed a family of their father and deprived the community of a hardworking citizen.”

The killing sparked fear and outrage within the Ohwim-Amanfrom community, with residents calling for swift police action.

Police Investigation and Arrests

The IGP outlined the steps taken by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following the incident. Forensic experts processed the crime scene overnight, collecting fingerprints and biological samples, and reviewing CCTV footage from nearby homes and businesses.

Within 72 hours, investigators had identified key suspects. A special operations team was subsequently deployed to track and apprehend the individuals believed to be involved.

Three primary suspects were arrested in separate intelligence-led operations across Kumasi and its outskirts. Two additional accomplices were later apprehended while attempting to flee to another region.

Police also recovered items believed to belong to the deceased, including a mobile phone and a distinctive wristwatch. A locally manufactured pistol and several rounds of ammunition were seized during the arrests.

Community Support and Next Steps

The IGP commended residents of Ohwim-Amanfrom for providing critical information that supported the investigation. Anonymous tips, he noted, helped investigators confirm the identities and locations of the suspects.

“Let me assure the public that crime has no hiding place,” the IGP said. “The Ghana Police Service remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.”

The five suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.

Enhanced Security Measures

In response to the incident, the IGP announced intensified night patrols in Kumasi and surrounding districts, alongside strengthened intelligence operations targeting armed robbery networks.

“We mourn with the Amankwaa family,” he concluded. “But we remain resolute in our duty to protect our communities. Criminal elements will not be allowed to terrorize law-abiding citizens.”
