The Koforidua High Court in the Eastern Region has sentenced 25-year-old Vera Asare to 10 years’ imprisonment for carrying out an acid attack on her boyfriend, Daniel Omane, which later led to his death.
Asare was convicted for attacking Omane, a mobile phone dealer popularly known as “Anelka,” on November 29, 2024, in Koforidua.
According to court proceedings, the attack followed accusations that Omane had been unfaithful.
Omane sustained severe injuries in the assault and was admitted to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, where he battled for his life for several months.
He eventually succumbed to his injuries on July 25, 2025. He has since been buried.
The couple shared a three-year-old child.
Before delivering the sentence, the court ordered that a pregnancy test be conducted on Asare.
The decision briefly delayed proceedings and sparked emotional scenes in the courtroom on Monday morning, with members of the victim’s family expressing anger over the deferral.
The court subsequently imposed the 10-year custodial sentence.
