Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports, Hon. Ernest Henry Norgbey, had disclosed that nearly half of the $30 million will be needed to support the Black Stars for the 2026 World Cup bid has been secured, however calling for more support.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Norgbey disclosed that $12 million and 30,000 Ghana cedis had been realized so far from the significant fundraising campaign launched by President John Dramani Mahama.
The fundraising initiative was aimed at supporting the Black Stars’ preparation, logistics, and participation in the tournament.
Norgbey emphasized that the committee’s leading role in championing making substantial contribution to the fund.
He is therefore appealing to corporate Ghana and individuals to support the cause, urging them to contribute towards the fund.
Doubling as the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman,he also addressed concerns about transparency and accountability, assuring the public that robust oversight mechanisms will be implemented to ensure the funds are utilized effectively.
Honourable Ernest Henry Norgbey indicated the Committee’s resolve to working closely with the Ministry of Sports and the Ghana Football Association to ensure the Black Stars are well-prepared for the tournament.
The Ashaiman MP, doubling as the Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee, expressed confidence that Ghana will make a mark at the World Cup. He urged Ghanaians to rally behind the Black Stars, saying “we want the Black Stars of Ghana to bring the cup for the first time in the history of Ghana”.
Hon. Norgbey’s announcement has been welcomed by Ghanaians, who are eager to see the Black Stars succeed at the World Cup. The fundraising campaign is expected to continue, with the committee urging all stakeholders to contribute to the effort.
The Black Stars’ participation in the World Cup is seen as a significant opportunity for Ghana to showcase its football talent and cultural identity on the global stage. With the fundraising campaign gaining pace, all eyes are on the team as they prepare to take on the best in the world.
