The DAF Embassy of the Diaspora, speaking on behalf of the family, announces with deep reverence the transition of Queen Mother Viola Ford Fletcher, who “took her wings” on 24 November 2025, at the remarkable age of 111.
Born on May 10, 1914, Queen Mother Fletcher embodied grace, fortitude, and an unyielding spirit.
As one of the oldest survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, her life stood as a living testament to both the painful history she witnessed and the extraordinary resilience she carried forward.
Her presence served as a bridge between generations—an enduring reminder of the courage required to confront injustice and the hope necessary to build a better world.
In recognition of her legacy and her profound connection to the African diaspora, Queen Mother Fletcher and her brother were honored with Ghanaian citizenship and celebrated through traditional naming ceremonies—an affirmation of heritage, belonging, and global admiration.
Her story is woven with themes of courage, determination, and unwavering dignity. She touched countless lives not only through her testimony but through the quiet strength with which she carried her truth.
Queen Mother Viola Ford Fletcher leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire communities across the world.
Truly, hers was “A Life Well Lived.” She will be forever remembered as strong, resilient, and beautiful.
To honor her extraordinary life, the DAF Embassy of the Diaspora will host a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, 3 December 2025, at the historic W.E.B. Du Bois Center, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
