Three young persons at Dabala and Sogakope in the Volta Region have been arrested for allegedly impersonating the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and other prominent personalities on social media to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The suspects have been identified as Gideon Awudi, 25; Edem Soku, 33; and Judith Soku, 31. Police say the trio is suspected of engaging in multiple cybercrime activities, including mobile money fraud, credit card fraud, airtime scams, and online sales fraud using various social media platforms.
According to police sources, the suspects created fake social media accounts bearing the names and images of high-profile individuals to deceive victims into sending money and personal information.
All three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations, while authorities work to identify and apprehend any additional accomplices linked to the alleged fraud network.
Police have cautioned the public to remain vigilant and verify online identities before engaging in financial transactions.
