Anger in Awutu Bereku After Hospitalised Patient Dies While Going to Buy Water

Residents of Awutu Bereku in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region have expressed anger at staff of the Awutu Bereku Health Centre following the death of a man who was reportedly on admission at the facility.

The incident occurred near the Awutu Bereku Police Station, a short distance from the health centre. According to information gathered, the man, believed to be in his late 50s, reportedly left his hospital bed to buy sachet water.

After purchasing the water, he is said to have collapsed and attempted to return to the health facility to continue his treatment.

Eyewitnesses told our team that people at the scene rushed to the health centre to alert the nurse on duty to provide first aid. However, residents allege that no health worker responded immediately to the calls for help.

The health facility is said to be approximately 15 metres from where the man collapsed, and some community members insist that a prompt response from health staff could have altered the outcome.

Angry residents have since blamed both health workers and the police, accusing them of failing to act swiftly to assist the patient.

Police later conveyed the body to the mortuary, pending identification by the deceased’s family to allow investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The incident has heightened tension in the area, with residents calling for accountability from the management of the Awutu Bereku Health Centre as investigations continue.
