Cocoa Farmers Left in the Lumps as Government Slashes Prices-Kwabre East MP Decried

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the cocoa industry, the government has slashed the price of cocoa, leaving farmers feeling betrayed and angry.

The decision, which was announced recently, has sparked heated debate in parliament, with opposition lawmakers accusing the government of mismanagement and prioritizing profits over the welfare of farmers.

Speaking in parliament, the Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Honourable Onyinah Acheampong Kwasi-Gyamfi expressed dismay at the government’s decision, stating that it was a clear example of the administration’s incompetence and lack of regard for the plocation of cocoa farmers.

“Why should we have a government that puts an institution like COBOD in a situation like this?” the lawmaker asked, referring to the Cocoa Board.

The lawmaker further alleged that the current situation was a result of mismanagement and that the government was more interested in cutting corners and lining its pockets than in supporting farmers.

“You are only thinking about how you can get your percentage and go away,” the lawmaker said, addressing the government.

The price reduction has also raised concerns about the impact on the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians who depend on cocoa farming.

“Farmers are reportedly unhappy with the decision, and many are worried about how they will make ends meet,”he said.

The government has assured farmers that they will receive payment for their cocoa by the end of the week, but many remain skeptical.

The move has also sparked fears about the future of Ghana’s cocoa industry, which has been a major contributor to the country’s economy for decades.
