Member of Parliament for Kwabre East Constituency, Honourable Onyinah Acheampong Kwasi-Gyamfi has criticized the government’s economic policies, saying they are hurting farmers and exporters.
Speaking in Parliament while debating on the State of the Nation Address(SONA), the MP claimed the government is focused on artificial indicators like inflation and currency stabilization disclosing that government has injected $10 billion to prop up the currency.
The MP argued that the move has made exports more expensive and encouraged imports, hurting local farmers.
“Coco farmers are crying, maize farmers are crying, rice farmers are crying, beans farmers are crying, tomato traders are crying, and cashew farmers are crying,” the MP said, blaming the government’s policies for their struggles.
The MP also questioned the president’s claim of creating 1 million jobs, saying it’s not reflected in the statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service.
The MP urged Ghanaians to assess the situation themselves, saying the true state of the economy is that farmers are struggling, nurses and teachers haven’t been recruited, and living costs are rising.
The government’s economic policies have come under fire from various stakeholders, including farmers and workers’ unions.
The opposition MP’s comments are likely to add to the pressure on the government to review its economic strategy and address the challenges facing the country.
The government has been responding to the MP’s allegations, but the controversy highlights the ongoing debate about the country’s economic direction.
