A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court for his role in a 2022 armed robbery at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti South Region.
The convict, Dominic Ofori, also known as Fanta, was arrested on 16th February 2026 after evading arrest for nearly four years.
He pleaded guilty to robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and was subsequently handed a 25-year custodial sentence with hard labour.
Background to the Robbery
According to police reports, on 20th March 2022, the Manso Adubia District Police received intelligence that a group of armed men from Manso Abodom were planning to attack a mining site at Manso Akwasiso to rob the owner of gold concentrate.
Acting on the tip-off, police mounted a coordinated operation and laid an ambush at the targeted site.
At about 5:30 p.m. that day, four armed men reportedly stormed the mining location, fired indiscriminately and made away with gold concentrate belonging to the miners.
Officers who were on surveillance intervened, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Three of the suspects — Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif and Gideon Takyi — sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and were pronounced dead on arrival at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum.
Dominic Ofori managed to escape at the time but remained on the police wanted list until his arrest earlier this month.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Authorities say the conviction underscores their resolve to pursue suspects who attempt to evade the law, regardless of how long it takes.
