Ghana’s renowned human rights lawyer and Member of Parliament for Madina, Mr. Francis-Xavier Sosu, has achieved a major milestone in his advocacy career by being granted full membership in the Coalition for an Effective African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Court Coalition).
The confirmation, formally signed by the Coalition’s Coordinator, Sophia Ebby, places Mr. Sosu among an exclusive circle of distinguished legal minds and institutions committed to strengthening the African Court’s independence, accessibility, and effectiveness.
As a full member, Mr. Sosu will now play an active role in shaping continental legal reforms. His new status entitles him to participate in advocacy campaigns, engage in capacity-building programs, collaborate with leading legal organisations, and contribute to key policy discussions to advance human rights protections across Africa.
The African Court Coalition highlighted that membership also promotes regional collaboration among human rights defenders and provides access to timely updates from the African Court and other continental legal bodies.
He now joins the ranks of other respected institutions, including the Tanganyika Law Society (Tanzania), Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, and the Pan-African Lawyers Union.
This appointment is widely seen as recognition of Mr. Sosu’s trailblazing work in human rights and social justice within Ghana.
From the courtroom to Parliament, he has remained a steadfast advocate for the marginalized and a fierce proponent of legal reform.
Among his most impactful contributions are his legal victories on behalf of remand prisoners, his tireless campaign to abolish the death penalty in Ghana, and his leadership in drafting legislation to criminalize witchcraft accusations and other forms of gender-based violence.
