Four suspected armed robbers were shot dead in a police operation near Sanfo-Aduam in the Ashanti South Region on April 12, after allegedly planning to attack a local mining site.
The operation, led by the Regional Anti-Robbery Unit, was based on intelligence linking the suspects to a string of violent robberies in Fomena, Dompoase, and other parts of the region.
The five-man gang reportedly arrived at the targeted location in a Kia Picanto taxi, armed with an AK-47 rifle and pump-action shotguns.
According to police reports, officers confronted the suspects and ordered them to surrender. However, the gang opened fire, prompting officers to return fire.
Four suspects were fatally wounded and later confirmed dead at the Bekwai Government Hospital. A fifth suspect, who was critically injured, remains under police guard.
Police recovered the AK-47 rifle—previously reported stolen in an earlier robbery—along with two pump-action guns, live ammunition, and spent cartridges at the scene.
The gang is believed to be responsible for a series of attacks on miners, a rural bank, and private residences, often stealing gold concentrates and large sums of cash.
Ashanti South Regional Commander, ACP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, praised the officers involved for their swift and courageous response, vowing that the police will continue to pursue criminal networks threatening peace and safety in the region.
“We are determined to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents and businesses,” he said at a press briefing in Asante Bekwai on April 14.
The Ghana Police Service has also urged the public to support ongoing efforts to combat crime by sharing credible information with law enforcement agencies.
