Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, made a symbolic appearance at the NPP national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, June 3, following his release from custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Wearing all-white attire—a traditional symbol of victory and gratitude—Chairman Wontumi was seen beaming with smiles, warmly greeting party officials and supporters who welcomed him with applause and cheers.
His visit came barely a day after he secured release from EOCO custody, ending a six-day detention that has sparked widespread controversy within the ruling party.

‘Grateful to the Party Family’ — Wontumi Thanks Supporters
In a brief but emotionally charged address at the NPP headquarters, Wontumi extended heartfelt appreciation to party faithful who stood by him throughout his ordeal. He singled out NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, for special mention, praising his loyalty and leadership during what he called “a difficult time.”
“I had to come and show how grateful I am. May God bless you. Everything will be fine,” Wontumi told party members gathered at the headquarters.
Background: Arrest and Legal Controversy
Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in connection with an ongoing EOCO investigation into alleged fraud and money laundering activities.
The circumstances surrounding the probe have not been officially disclosed, but sources say the case involves complex financial transactions linked to several private entities.
He was granted bail set at GHS 50 million with two sureties to be justified—a condition that proved difficult to meet immediately, leading to his continued detention until earlier this week.
Party Uproar Over Bail Conditions
The bail terms sparked intense backlash within the NPP, with many describing the conditions as “politically motivated” and “excessively punitive.”
Members of the NPP Minority Caucus in Parliament, as well as numerous grassroots supporters, massed at EOCO’s offices in protest, calling for a fairer and more humane approach to justice.
“We are not saying the law shouldn’t take its course, but these bail conditions are clearly designed to humiliate him,” one NPP MP told reporters during the protests.
Health Concerns During Detention
Reports also emerged during Wontumi’s time in custody suggesting he had experienced health challenges, further fuelling criticism of the EOCO’s handling of the case.
Close aides alleged he was denied adequate medical attention, a claim EOCO has yet to formally respond to.
What Next for Wontumi?
Despite the legal cloud hanging over him, Tuesday’s visit to the party headquarters appears to be a strategic move by Wontumi to reassert his political relevance and rally support.
Analysts say the show of solidarity from senior party figures sends a clear signal that he retains substantial influence within the NPP—especially in the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold of the party.
Political observers believe how the NPP leadership manages this situation—balancing internal unity with rule-of-law expectations—could shape public perception as the 2024 election cycle unfolds.
