The Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted an attempted theft of a gold consignment valued at over GHC 1.3 million, arresting three suspects in connection with the foiled heist.
The suspects—Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif, and Kenneth Khartey—were apprehended on Thursday, 26th June 2025, during a coordinated operation along the Accra-Akuapem-Mamfe road.
The arrest was the culmination of days of intelligence-gathering by the Special Support Unit (SSU) of the Ghana Police Service based at the National Headquarters.
Inside the Heist Plot
According to police sources, the investigation was triggered on Wednesday, 25th June 2025, after intelligence indicated that a gold dealer’s trusted driver had conspired with an individual posing as a bodyguard to rob the dealer during a scheduled gold delivery.
Further surveillance and intelligence-gathering revealed a broader plan involving external collaborators poised to intercept the consignment en route to its destination.
On the day of the attempted robbery, Kenneth Khartey was intercepted and arrested while riding a motorbike near Akuapem-Mamfe, where he was observed closely trailing a Toyota Land Cruiser believed to be carrying the gold consignment.
The coordinated arrest of the two other suspects followed shortly after.
Tactical Execution and Arrests
The operation was described by police officials as a textbook example of effective inter-agency coordination and the value of proactive intelligence work.
The Special Support Unit worked discreetly and swiftly to monitor movements, confirm identities, and ensure the safety of both the consignment and its custodians.
The arrests were made without incident, and all three suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
Police Statement and Caution to the Public
In a brief statement, the Ghana Police Service commended the vigilance and professionalism of the officers involved in averting what could have been a major criminal operation.
“The successful disruption of this planned robbery highlights the importance of real-time intelligence and the Police Service’s commitment to protecting life and property.
We are continuing our investigations, and more arrests may follow as we unravel the full extent of this criminal network,” the statement read.
