Libyan Army Arrests Ghanaian Crime Boss ‘Begi’ in Tripoli; 11 Trafficked African Women Rescued from Forced Prostitution

The Libyan Army has arrested a Ghanaian national known only by the alias “Begi”, an internationally wanted criminal figure accused of running a human trafficking and sex exploitation ring in Tripoli, Libya’s capital.

The operation, carried out by Libyan military intelligence and security forces, also led to the rescue of 11 women of various African nationalities, who were being held against their will and forced into prostitution under Begi’s command.

The Arrest

According to Libyan security officials, the raid was conducted following intelligence reports that the suspect—identified by international authorities as a fugitive—was running a hidden criminal den in Tripoli.

Begi, whose real name has yet to be disclosed by Libyan authorities, is believed to have strong links to a broader West African trafficking network with operations stretching from the Sahel to the Mediterranean.

The Libyan Army described Begi as a “key figure” in underground human trafficking circles, with a track record of luring vulnerable women from across the continent under false promises of jobs or migration opportunities to Europe.

Instead, the women—mostly from sub-Saharan African countries—were trafficked into Libya and subjected to physical abuse, sexual exploitation, and forced prostitution in inhumane conditions.

Victims Rescued

The 11 rescued women, visibly traumatized but now under protection, are receiving medical care, psychological support, and temporary shelter from Libyan authorities.

Efforts are underway to coordinate with their respective embassies and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for repatriation or further protection assistance.

Libyan officials say more victims may be discovered as investigations continue, and additional accomplices could be arrested in the coming days.

International Implications

The arrest of Begi is a significant milestone for both Libyan and international law enforcement, as he has reportedly been on Interpol watchlists for crimes including human trafficking, sexual slavery, and organized crime.

Ghanaian and regional authorities are expected to collaborate with Libya in further investigations and possible extradition proceedings.

Human rights organizations have welcomed the arrest but also called for greater cross-border cooperation to dismantle trafficking syndicates that exploit African migrants en route to Europe through Libya.

A Growing Crisis

Libya, which has been grappling with instability and militia rule since 2011, has become a major hub for human trafficking, with countless migrants from West and Central Africa passing through its borders in search of better lives.

Many fall prey to criminal networks that subject them to forced labor, sexual exploitation, or prolonged detention in appalling conditions.

Begi’s arrest, authorities hope, will send a clear message that Libya is cracking down on such operations and working with international partners to dismantle trafficking rings and protect vulnerable populations.
