Officers of the Ghana Police Service at the Tema Regional Command have arrested two suspects after they allegedly offered GH¢150,000 in an attempt to secure the release of a truck loaded with suspected cannabis.
The suspects, identified as Victor Asigbey, 40, and Peter Asigbey, 35, are said to have approached the police following the interception of a Sinotruck carrying 3,009 slabs of what is believed to be cannabis, commonly referred to as “wee.”
According to initial reports, the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled upon spotting police officers. The vehicle was subsequently impounded, and a search reportedly uncovered the large quantity of suspected narcotics.
Police sources indicate that the two suspects later appeared at the station and allegedly offered GH¢150,000 to officers in a bid to have the truck released. Despite receiving the money as part of the operation, the officers proceeded to arrest the suspects.
The two are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to track down the driver who fled the scene.
Authorities say investigations remain ongoing as part of efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking and related offences in the region.
