Nationwide Water Crisis: Sector Minister assures Swift Action

Minister responsible for Works and Housing, Kenneth Adjei, has disclosed that strategic measures are being taking  to address swiftly the nationwide water crisis.

The minister had made this disclosure and assurance on Wednesday February 18,2026 following a meeting  by parliament Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources with the  Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources as well as key representatives of the Ghana Water Company Limited and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency. 

The meeting saw  discussions on the provision of adequate water services in rural areas and ways by which government continuous intervention can contribute to the swift improvement.

According to Mr. Adjei, the current water challenges began under the previous administration, which he said did not adequately address the underlying issues. 

However, laid emphasized on the fact that the current  government is fully committed to resolving the crisis and implementing sustainable measures to prevent future occurrences.

Chairman of the Water & Sanitation Committe, John Oti Bless stated  that the committee had invited the minister and  agencies due to overlapping responsibility conflicts and challenges in operation but the mattere has been referred for resolution. 

On his part, he pledged the  committee’s support in finding solution to this water crisis across the nation.

Ghana is currently facing a critical water crisis characterized by a severe supply-demand gap, widespread contamination from illegal mining (Galamsey), and decaying infrastructure. 

The February 2026 report, which synthesises data from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and GWL’s tariff proposals, shows that the state-owned utility currently produces about 945,275 cubic metres of water daily, far below the national urban demand of 1.19 million cubic metres, resulting in a daily deficit of 244,725 cubic metres, equivalent to 21% of demand.
