The Police Intelligence Directorate has arrested seven individuals in connection with a fraudulent electronic traffic violation scheme that targeted unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspects — Martha Quarshie, Peter Ofori McCarthy, Robert Akplehe, Christian Akplehe, Alfred Kofi Totimeh, Michael Edem Amemornu, and Prosper Otumfour — were picked up from various hideouts in Ada and Winneba following intelligence-led operations.

How the Alleged Scheme Worked
Preliminary investigations indicate that the group allegedly created an online application used to send fake electronic traffic violation notices to victims. The fraudulent messages reportedly directed recipients to click on a link to pay supposed traffic fines.

According to investigators, suspect Prosper Otumfour is alleged to have registered multiple Telecel Cash SIM cards using the names of family members and associates.

However, he reportedly retained possession of the SIM cards to receive payments from victims before transferring the funds to accomplices for distribution.

Items Retrieve
Police say several items were retrieved during the arrests, including:
-
GH¢10,978 in cash
-
Laptop computers
-
External hard drives
-
Multiple mobile phones
-
Numerous Telecel SIM cards
-
Bank cards and identification documents
Authorities believe these items were used in executing the alleged scam.
Public Advisory

The Police have reiterated their call for the public to remain vigilant and verify any electronic traffic violation notices before making payments. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious messages or payment links to the Police for immediate investigation.

The suspects are currently assisting with investigations as authorities work to uncover the full scope of the operation and identify any additional victims.
