Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been referred to Parliament Committee on Privileges and Immunities upon the invoking of Order 67(1) and 32 of the Standing Orders of Parliament by the minister responsible for Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.
“Mr speaker I make reference to the State of the Nation Address where the minority leader got up and even before then, on thursday when he started this allegation I took the opportunity on the floor and corrected him and even encouraged him that if he wanted details, he could write and I will furnish him with all the details” he recalled
“However, he decided to take advantage of the State of the nation when the whole world was listening to us to say categorically that the current internal security recruitment is scandalous” he added
According to the minister, the minority leader had alleged that the security services are involved in illegal recruitment and are also causing a financial burden to the applicants by introducing the online aspect of the recruitment.
However, Mr. Muntaka described the allegations as false, malicious, and completely devoid of factual basis, stating that the claims amount to a calculated attempt to undermine what he described as a transparent and merit-based recruitment process that the Ministry has worked diligently to make fair, accountable, and credible.
“Mr Speaker, my commitment and that of H.E the president is to ensure that we recruit only the physically, medically and morally upright Ghanaians into the security services “ he assured
Raising to his defence, the minority leader added his voice by seconding his referral to the committee to indeed determine if he has breached parliamentary privileges.
“Let the referral be made and let there be a public hearing and I Afenyo Markin who this day is seen according to the allegation is saying something which is untruthful and because of this is a breach of parliamentary privileges “ he said
The First Deputy Speaker Benard Ahiafor who was presiding at the meeting, subsequently referred the matter to the Committee on Privileges and Immunities for consideration and to report back to the August house.
