Nhyiaeso MP Advocates for Climate Change Research to Mitigate Impact

Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Honourable Dr. Stephen Amoah has emphasized the urgent need for the country to prioritize research into climate change, warning that the consequences of inaction could be severe.

Speaking in Parliament, Honourable Dr. Amoah highlighted the devastating impact of climate change on African countries, including increased migration, school closures, and economic deterioration.

The member cited examples of countries where temperatures have soared to 45 degrees, affecting food and water security, livelihoods, and overall economic stability.

“We are not far from the consequences our brothers from other parts of our continent are being confronted with,” the member warned.

To mitigate these effects, Honourable Amoah called for increased investment in research and development, citing Act 1056, which allocates 0.5% of annual revenue to research.

The legislator questioned whether Ghana has been adhering to this law and urged the government to ensure that the allocated funds are used effectively.

The MP emphasized that climate change is a global issue that requires a collective response, and Ghana should take it seriously.

“Just as the whole world is battling this, we, as a country and as a sovereignty being part of this whole global domain, should take it very seriously,” they said.

The call for increased research funding comes as Ghana faces numerous climate-related challenges, including irregular rainfall patterns and rising temperatures.

Experts warn that without urgent action, these challenges could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s economy and citizens.

Hon. Stephen Amoah’s statement has sparked renewed calls for Ghana to take concrete steps to address climate change.
