Former Energy Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman aspirant, Hon. Boakye Agyarko, has declared that his ultimate mission as Chairman will be to make former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia President of Ghana.
According to Mr. Agyarko, his decision to contest for the Chairmanship has the full blessing of Dr. Bawumia, with whom he has worked closely since 2008.
“Dr. Bawumia was one of the first persons I informed about my intention to contest for National Chairman and he gave his blessings. I have worked with him closely since 2008 – in campaign assignments and in government. We meet and talk always,” he stated.
“Apart from my close relationship with Dr. Bawumia, I am duty-bound by our party’s constitution to work together with everybody. As National Chairman, my mission will be to make Dr. Bawumia President,” he added.
Mr. Agyarko said when elected, he will leverage the experience of the party’s two living former Presidents as key pillars of his chairmanship.
“President Kufuor and President Akufo-Addo will be my key advisers when I become National Chairman of NPP. They are our greatest human resource in the party,” he said.
Recounting his decades-long service to the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, Mr. Agyarko said his political journey began in 1978 as a youth leader of the Popular Front Party (PFP), the forerunner to the NPP.
“In 1978, I was one of the youth leaders of the Popular Front Party (PFP),” he said.
He disclosed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor has been a major inspiration behind his chairmanship ambition, revealing that the former President urged him for seven continuous years to contest.
“President Kufuor has been one of the brains behind my quest to become National Chairman. For about seven continuous years, he was urging me to contest. I have heeded his clarion call, just as Constituency Chairpersons urged me to contest,” he said.
On his credentials in building the party abroad, Mr. Agyarko noted that he was the Founding Chairman of the NPP in North America and became the first President for North America and Canada.
“I was the Founding Chairman of NPP in North America and became the first President for North America and Canada. I helped to establish most of the diaspora branches in Europe except UK,” he explained.
Beyond politics, he said he brings 23 years of corporate experience from the Bank of New York, where he rose to the position of Vice President.
Touching on the nature of the office, he said the chairmanship demands dignity and national respect.
“Chairman adwuma no yɛ animuonyam adwuma. You must command the respect of all Ghanaians, not just NPP members,” he stated.
Outlining his vision, Mr. Agyarko said his role will be to provide strategic leadership, mobilize resources and empower party structures at all levels to deliver victory in 2028.
“My duty as National Chairman will be to strategize, mobilize resources and empower the various departments to function. My duty will be to ensure that General Secretary, National Organizer and all position holders at all levels across the country have what it takes to deliver,” he assured.
