ECOWAS Ministers Back President Mahama as Region’s Sole Nominee for AU Chairmanship in 2027

President John Dramani Mahama

The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has given its unanimous support to former President John Dramani Mahama as West Africa’s sole candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) when the position rotates to the sub-region in 2027.

The endorsement was announced in Abuja, Nigeria, during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers, where members adopted recommendation C/REC.1/12/25 in favour of Ghana’s bid.

The Council noted Ghana’s longstanding contributions to ECOWAS, its rising diplomatic influence, and the importance of enhancing the presence of ECOWAS nationals in regional and global leadership roles.

Ministers further reaffirmed their commitment to presenting a united front to promote and safeguard the interests of the sub-region on the continental stage.

The recommendation now proceeds to the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, who are expected to formally adopt the declaration during their meeting on Sunday, December 14.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared the development on Facebook, expressing appreciation to fellow ministers for the unanimous support.

“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” he stated, adding that Ghana remains committed to making Africa proud.

Once affirmed by the Heads of State, the endorsement will position President Mahama as the region’s official nominee for the AU Chairmanship when West Africa takes its turn in 2027.
