Police Foil Highway Robbery Plot in Bono Region; One Suspect Killed, Five Firearms Recovered

The Ghana Police Service has recovered five firearms following an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected robbery gangs in the Bono Region.

According to the Bono Regional Police Command, intelligence gathered on 11 February 2026 revealed that a group of armed men were planning to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa–Gonokrom highway.

Acting swiftly on the information, surveillance teams were deployed to the area to prevent the anticipated robbery.

In the early hours of 12 February 2026, officers advancing toward a parked motorbike near the suspected location came under gunfire from assailants concealed in nearby bushes. Police returned fire. At daybreak, a search of the area led to the discovery of one male suspect, who had sustained gunshot wounds. An AK-47 rifle was found beside him.

A subsequent sweep of the scene uncovered a sack containing additional weapons and ammunition. Items retrieved included two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action shotgun, a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition and an additional 34 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and another AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds, along with 10 extra rounds.

Officers also recovered 39 BB cartridges, a dagger, a mobile phone, a black mask, a talisman, and a Honda motorbike believed to have been used by the suspects.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

The Bono Regional Police Command has assured residents that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the gang.

The Command further appealed to the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the Region.
