Stop using constitutional bodies to intimidate political opponents-Okere MP cautions

Member of parliament for the Okere Constituency, Mr. Addo-Kenneth is urging the government not to reduce constitutional institutions to object of intimidation of political opponents.

According to the Okere lawmaker, the overwhelming mandate given by Ghanaians to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressly excluded intimidation of political opponents.

Mr. Addo-Kenneth made the call at the forecourt of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) during the Minority MP’s walkout of the House of parliament demanding the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontimi from EOCO detention.

According to him, his caucus’ demonstration is not merely demanding for his release but to press for a halt of the human rights abuses.

The MP emphasized the need for EOCO to respect the fundamental rights of Chairman Wontimi especially when he has many investments to warrant him stay in Ghana.

The MP stressed, “We are demanding his release, and they should stop placing impediment in the way.

The lawmaker indicated his caucus’ readiness to proceed on the next line of action should EOCO fails to release him.

The Member called on EOCO to respect the law much as they expect from others otherwise, what he termed “positive defiance” would be resorted.

He maintained that EOCO could not take the law into their own hands and expect something different from others.

“In fact, the law acknowledges that when you see someone committing crime, you have the right to correct the crime”, he noted.

“We are protesting within our right. Somebody is being held against his right.

And you know the irony; EOCO is here and Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice is just opposite and yet, they commit outrageous atrocities against human rights”, he said.

“We were monitoring the situation and seeing the level of disrespect of human rights, we decided to abandoned parliament and demand for the right thing to be done”, he added.
