Osu Castle Hearing, a Psychological Attack on Chief Justice – Kwabre East MP Slams Government Tactics

The Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Mr. Onyina-Acheampong Akwasi Gyamfi, has strongly condemned what he describes as the deliberate psychological intimidation of the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, during recent proceedings related to her removal from office.

Speaking in response to revelations made by Justice Torkonoo during a news conference, the MP described the choice of the Osu Castle as the venue for the disciplinary hearings as “an act of emotional torture” aimed at breaking the Chief Justice’s resolve.

Justice Torkonoo had earlier raised alarm over the secrecy surrounding the process and the symbolic weight of holding the hearing at Osu Castle—a location she revealed holds deeply traumatic memories, as it is the same place where her uncle was allegedly killed during a previous regime.

In a television interview, Mr. Gyamfi stated “It is unconscionable.
There are many suitable venues across Accra—neutral, formal, and fitting for a matter of this gravity. Choosing Osu Castle, given its disturbing history for the Chief Justice, can only be seen as a calculated move to inflict emotional distress.”

The lawmaker asserted that this decision forms part of a wider strategy by the ruling government to “weaken her spirit and derail her resistance against unconstitutional actions.”

He further called on the government to stay true to its much touted “Resetting the Nation Agenda,” urging it to engage political opponents and judicial officers in good faith, rather than through what he terms “acts of intimidation.”

Mr. Gyamfi echoed the Chief Justice’s warning that Ghana’s judiciary is increasingly under threat, citing what he called a “dangerous trend” of constitutional breaches, political interference, and targeted harassment of high-profile figures within the justice system.

“Our democracy stands on the pillars of an independent judiciary and adherence to constitutional norms.
What we are witnessing is a gradual erosion of those foundations, and we must all rise in defense of justice,” he added.
