President John Dramani Mahama has appointed two senior cabinet members to temporarily oversee the Defence and Environment ministries following the tragic deaths of the incumbent ministers in a helicopter crash.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has been assigned additional responsibility as caretaker Minister for Defence.
Meanwhile, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah will take on the role of acting Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The appointments come in the wake of a devastating Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The Z-9 military helicopter was on an official mission when it went down under still-undisclosed circumstances. Investigations into the cause of the crash are currently underway.
President Mahama described the loss as “a national tragedy” and extended condolences to the families of all those who perished.
In a statement issued Thursday morning, he said the interim appointments were necessary to ensure continuity of government operations during a period of mourning and transition.
Further announcements regarding permanent replacements are expected in the coming weeks
