Member of Parliament for Garu constituency of the Upper East Region,Honourable Dr. Thomas Anaba is appealing for speedy expedition of work on the Garu District hospital to compliment the only existing 40-beds hospital built by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in order to serve the healthcare needs of the people of the enclave.
Sadly recounting the difficulty of residents within the enclave, Dr. Anaba disclosed that the only district hospital started by John Dramani Mahama’s first term in 2012 was since vandalized and materials robbed by individuals linked to the New Patriotic Party of which the party chairman was arrested but disclosed that the case died shortly after the NPP assumed office.
A protest by the people of Garu staged demanding the construction of the hospital during the regime of the New Patriotic Party failed to yield the needed result as the turned blind ear to their demand.
He however noted that the then NPP government shockingly included the same uncompleted hospital in the tracker developed by them to the alter dismay of the people,a situation that was met with demands for the hospital but all the government did was to commence its flagship agenda 111 hospitals.
“So agenda 111 came to Garu because of the criticism we labelled at them due to the abandonment of the one John Dramani Mahama had started. This was a compensation for the hospital they abandoned in Garu.So far, though parts of the building have been roofed, it is yet to be fully completed,”Dr. Anaba disclosed.
“I have been there myself and they are yet construct roads leading to the hospital. I am not pleased with the speed of work on the project. We do not have hospital apart from the Presbyterian health Centre with only 40 beds and Garu is a very big place coupled with the fact that Bawku hospital not functioning due to the conflict,”the Garu lawmaker bemoaned.
He indicated that most people from Garu used to seek treatment at Bawku hospital however, the ongoing conflict is compelling many seeking care.
He revealed that whereas some of the nurses had escaped to Garu due to the Bawku conflict, others have gone to Zebila with patients from Timpani, Binduri left to their fate.
“So that’s why we are calling for the completion of the Garu hospital. Beside that every district must have a hospital and Garu with its growing population vis a vis other considerations for a hospital deserves one,”the Garu legislator indicated.
