The National Communications Director of the United Party {UP}, Solomon Owusu, has warned that the government’s ‘Nkoko Nkitikiti’ initiative could fail if political leaders and other stakeholders continue to import frozen chicken into the country.
According to him, the importation of frozen what he described as “dead” chicken undermines local poultry farmers and defeats the core objective of the initiative, which is to boost domestic poultry production and strengthen Ghana’s agricultural value chain.
Mr Owusu argued that without firm political will and strict enforcement measures to prioritise locally produced chicken, the initiative may struggle to achieve its intended impact.
He stressed that protecting local poultry producers is essential for job creation, food security, and reducing the country’s dependence on imports.
He therefore called on the government to take decisive steps to regulate poultry imports and demonstrate leadership by actively supporting Made-in-Ghana poultry products.
