President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has called on parliament to review or repeal laws that are detrimental to journalists’ welfare, citing concerns over press freedom and media development.
Speaking at a Parliament-Media soiree and recognition night,GJA President emphasized that certain laws, including a bill replacing the repealed Criminal Libel Act, are being used to stifle press freedom and criminalize defamation.
Mr. Dwumfour urged parliament to shift the focus from criminal to civil matters, promoting a more conducive environment for journalists.
The GJA commended the Speaker of Parliament for his commitment to media development and press freedom, highlighting efforts to improve journalists’ working conditions.
Appealing for support for a private member’s bill to establish a standardized wage for journalists, Mr. Dwumfour highlighted a key factor affecting Ghana’s press freedom ranking.
The association’s call comes amidst growing concerns about press freedom in Ghana, with many urging greater protection for journalists and media outlets.
