The controversy erupted after Mr. Agyapong, during a virtual engagement with delegates in the Upper East Region, accused Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of lying about comments concerning the health of the late Prof. Adu Boahen and his participation in the New Patriotic Party’s 1996 presidential primaries.
Mr. Agyapong also questioned Dr. Bawumia’s suitability for leadership—remarks that sparked widespread criticism within the party.
The situation took a new turn when the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, intervened to clarify that he—not Dr. Bawumia—was the source of the statements in question.
Chairman Wontumi publicly addressed the matter and called on Mr. Agyapong to render an apology to the former Vice President.
That call has now been heeded, with Mr. Agyapong issuing a formal apology to Dr. Bawumia and the party, bringing the controversy to a close.
