The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Kwetey, has announced key measures governing the party’s ongoing reorganisation, internal elections, and nomination processes, stressing transparency, inclusivity, and strict adherence to the party’s constitution.
Addressing the media, Mr. Kwetey said that pursuant to Article 54 of the NDC Constitution, the National Executive Committee (NEC) has approved general eligibility provisions under Section H of the Election Guidelines.
Under the new rules, any person seeking to contest for a party position who currently holds an office to which they were appointed by the President or Government must resign at least six months before filing nomination forms.
However, chairpersons or members of boards, or persons in analogous positions, are exempt from this requirement, as such roles are not considered full-time employment.
Offices Affected
The affected offices under this provision include, but are not limited to:
Ministers and Deputy Ministers
Chief Executive Officers, Managing Directors, their Deputies, or analogous officers
Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs)
Resignation Timelines
For the avoidance of doubt, affected officers intending to contest must comply with the following deadlines:
Constituency-level positions: Resign by April 2026
Regional-level positions: Resign by May 2026
National-level positions: Resign by June 2026
Mr. Kwetey stressed that these provisions are constitutional and will be enforced without exception.
Election Guidelines to Be Published
He also announced that the official election guidelines will be made public from today, allowing all members full access to the rules governing the internal electoral process.
Digital Platform for Party Processes
As part of the party’s digital transformation agenda, members have been directed to rely exclusively on the official NDC website, www.ndc.org.gh, as the authoritative source for information on branch, constituency, regional, and national elections.
All financial transactions—including payment of membership dues, donations, filing fees, and the submission of nomination forms—must be completed via the website using smartphones or other web-enabled devices.
USSD Option for Inclusivity
To ensure broad participation, the NDC has introduced a USSD service for members without smartphones.
Members can check their dues status and make payments by dialing *920*25#, enabling full participation regardless of internet access.
Call for Unity and Transparency
Mr. Kwetey called on party officials at all levels, from branch to national, to act diligently, transparently, and in line with the core values of the NDC.
“The objective is not merely to elect officers, but to strengthen the party, deepen internal democracy, consolidate unity, and position the NDC as a formidable political vehicle capable of delivering responsible, people-centred governance,” he said.
He cautioned that a strong party leads to strong governance, while weakening the party ultimately undermines government effectiveness.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the General Secretary reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to a credible, orderly, and inclusive reorganisation process that reflects the will of its members and strengthens the party’s democratic credentials.
He urged all members to cooperate fully with party structures and processes as the NDC continues to build a stronger, more vibrant, and more resilient political organisation.
“Let the National Democratic Congress continue to grow from strength to strength,” he said.
