President John Dramani Mahama administration has been accused of selective fight against illegal mining, with a lawmaker calling for decisive action to protect communities and the environment.
The speaking in Parliament,Member of Parliament for Bimbilla Constituency,Honourable Dominic Nitiwul expressed frustration over the destruction of farmlands, water bodies, and the livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians due to galamsey activities.
According to the legislator, Ghanaians are demanding nothing but a decisive action but not the ongoing selective action by the NDC government.
“We are not asking for much, just that our lands and waters are protected,” the lawmaker said.
“The youth are being destroyed, and our environment is being ravaged. It’s time for the government to act.”
The legislator cited instances where farmers’ lands were destroyed, and even a former Speaker’s farm was not spared, highlighting the extent of the problem.
The lawmaker urged the government to ban surface mining for a year, as was done in the past, and to arrest those involved in these activities, particularly those with alleged connections to powerful individuals.
The government has faced criticism for its handling of the galamsey menace, with many calling for more decisive action to protect the country’s natural resources and the communities affected by these activities.
