Salafest in Madina has Reduced Post-Eid Violence, Promoted Unity in the Muslim Community — Sufaya Kasim

The annual Salafest celebration in Madina, initiated by the Office of the Madina MP, Dr. Francis Xavier Sosu, is playing a significant role in reducing post-Eid violence and fostering unity within the Muslim community, according to Sufaya Kasim, Administrator of the Islamic Project under the MP’s office.

Organised in collaboration with local Islamic groups, the festival provides a safe and engaging environment for Muslim youth and families during Eid.

Speaking to Nyansapo News, Kasim explained that the initiative was introduced as a response to recurring incidents of violence and risky behaviour that often followed Eid celebrations.

“Traditionally, after Salah during Eid, many young people would travel to places like Nima or the beaches, where activities such as substance abuse and clashes sometimes led to injuries or even deaths,” she said.

“We realised the need to create a safer alternative, so we brought the celebration here, where the youth can have fun in a controlled and peaceful environment.”

The Madina Salafest features a wide range of activities designed to engage all age groups. These include tug-of-war, sack races, face painting, Qur’anic recitation, and UCMAS competitions, among others. The event also encourages strong family participation.

“You can see parents and even grandparents joining in,” Kasim noted.

“I saw an elderly woman who could barely walk, yet she came to enjoy the moment with her grandchildren. That tells you how impactful this programme has become.”

She stated that over the past few years, the festival has grown steadily in participation and impact.

Encouraged by its success, organisers plan to expand the initiative to include Eid al-Adha celebrations, another period often associated with increased youth outings.

“For the past three to four years, we have seen that the youth enjoy this programme and, more importantly, they remain safe.

That is why we want to replicate it during Eid al-Adha so that more people can benefit,” she added.

Beyond entertainment, the Islamic Project also focuses on youth development through education and skills training. Outreach programmes are regularly organised in schools to encourage students to pursue education or acquire vocational skills.

“We emphasise that even if formal education is interrupted, learning a trade can secure your future,” Kasim explained.

She revealed that the Islamic project also contributes to infrastructure development within Muslim communities, including the construction of mosques and schools.

“Several mosques have already been built under the initiative, and a school block project is currently underway at Babayara,” she said.

Kasim indicated that efforts are being made to support children in Islamic (Makaranta) schools by organising structured programmes such as Qur’anic recitation activities to enhance learning and discipline.

“Through a combination of recreation, education, and community development, Salafest continues to serve as a vital platform for promoting peace, safety, and social cohesion within Madina’s Muslim community,” she concluded.
